POSSIBILITIES [2019]
POSSIBILITIES
A 3×3×3 Rubik’s Cube. Invented by Ernő Rubik in the 1970s, this three-dimensional puzzle remains an iconic object of the 21st century. Its aim is deceptively simple: rotate the cube until each of its six faces displays a single color. Each cube comprises 54 colored facets, offering 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible combinations—more than the estimated number of galaxies in the observable universe. Yet, with knowledge and technique, the puzzle can be solved in seconds.
Through a series of photographic negatives, Nikahetiya explores the tension between vast possibility and singular resolution, questioning individual and collective choice, the power of action, and the ripple effects of decisions across time. The work examines why humans often seek one “correct” outcome, even when confronted with an almost infinite array of alternatives.
The accompanying animated video/GIF, POSSIBILITIES ∞, Edition 1/43 Quintillion + 1AP, extends this investigation into time and motion, visualizing the unfolding of potential pathways.
